The Sensex closed 42 points to close at 40,487.43, after having swung between a high & low of 40,645.63 and a 40,336.56 respectively, during the day, while the NSE Nifty50 closed 16-pts higher at 11,937.50 on Monday.
Among the 30-scrip Sensex stocks, the Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) come out as the top gainer, rising over 2-pc, followed by Axis Bank, Maruti Suzuki, Reliance, Power Grid and Tata Steel.
Conversely, Tata Consultancy Service (TCS), HCL Technologies, L&T, IndusInd Bank and Tech Mahindra, lost up to 2.9 pc.
In the Nifty pack of stocks, Bharat Petroleum, Axis bank, Adani Ports, HDFC and Maruti gained upto 2.2% wheres similar to the Sensex, TCS, HCL and L&T were major laggards, in the Nifty too.
Sectorally, NSE Nifty Auto emerged as the biggest gainer with a rise of 0.80 percent, followed by Metal (0.55%), financial service (0.38%) and pharma (0.05%).
